What are Skim Concrete Coatings?

‘Skim coating concrete’ is the term referring to a technique where a thin layer of concrete is applied for the purpose of floor repair or other various indoor remodeling projects.

You may be wondering if you can skim-coat the concrete in your home.

While this is possible, we’d always recommend an experienced professional handle any serious concrete refinishing projects to avoid potential risk or damage to your home.

It is common that homeowners may want to apply a skim coating on top of a driveway that needs patching, on a painted patio, or over previously painted concrete.

Among the vast types of concrete refinishing options, these ‘skim’ type coatings are referred to as decorative overlays.

(This may also be referred to as stamped concrete, depending on the application type.)

Like any concrete refinishing project, concrete overlays are installed by following a series of steps.

This will involve the careful preparation of your existing slab as well as the application and finishing of whatever coating is applied. (Outdoor decorative overlays are ONLY permitted in dry weather!)

Decorative overlays are a great way to add color or texture to various concrete surfaces, all while increasing the value of your home.

Overlays can be great for driveways, walkways, pool decks (most common,) patios, or indoor spaces.

Some overlays can take the form of a stamped pattern, actual wooden planks, stone, brick, or ‘freestyle’ designs, and other forms of geometrical artwork.

While these are 1-of-a-kind and intricate, they can be less cost-effective than a traditional Epoxy flake coating, which is well-suited for garages & pool decks.

As a responsible homeowner, you must weigh the pros and cons of every home renovation project, and conduct extensive research on any concrete contract you’re considering for your project. (Be sure to check Google reviews, Facebook reviews, BBB, etc)

How long does skim coating concrete last?

If it’s been properly installed by a professional, it can last 10-20+ years. It’s very important to make sure it’s installed correctly and flawlessly because it will not only ensure your concrete surface is protected, but is long-lasting.

Can you put a thin layer of concrete over concrete?

How thin can you pour concrete over concrete? You must keep in mind how thick the layer will be. If it’s any thinner than 2 inches (25 to 50 mm) thick, it won’t adequately bond to your surface because it will easily crack under pressure.

Can old concrete be resurfaced?

Yes! It can be topcoated by applying a thin coat of pre-mixed polymer-modified flowable mortar over an existing surface. This method is significantly less expensive than replacing it.

Is it worth sealing old concrete?

Yes, Sealing concrete will increase its longevity. Typically, a concrete driveway can last 10-30 years, unless damaged. In that case, it may need to be replaced sooner. Sealing your concrete not only ensures your concrete surface is protected, but long lasting.

We hope this helps!
